Our Swim School

The Beginning

Hout Bay Swimming Academy, formerly known as Wendy’s Swim School, was founded in 2000 by Wendy Paarman.

What began as a small home-based learn-to-swim school, has now expanded to include a wide range of water-based activities.

All swimming activities take place in a 3-lane, 15m heated indoor pool found in the heart of Hout Bay’s beachside suburb or at a privately owned 25 m, outdoor pool situated on Valley Road.

As the years have passed, many of Hout Bay’s children have seen themselves move through Wendy’s baby classes, on to individual learn-to-swim lessons and most recently, the more challenging squad training.

Wendy and her team of coaches are passionate and ensure that all lessons, classes and squads are taught with a patient, loving and encouraging approach.

Our Coaches

Our current team of coaches bring a great deal of swimming and teaching experience.

Wendy started teaching in 1999 and is Internationally Certified as a Baby, Pre-School and Learn-To-Swim Instructor. She also holds an International STA Safety and Rescue Certificate, as well as an International accreditation in Teaching People with Disabilities. She continues to head up our baby classes and individual learn-to-swim lessons.

Bevin is an Internationally Certified Baby, Pre-School and Learn-To-Swim Instructor and brings her excellent experience in competitive swimming to our team. She offers stroke correction to both individuals and the squads. In January 2022, Bevin discovered a love and natural talent for pool freediving.  After a very short time of intensive training, she has broken the South African 3 times over and now holds a whopping 165 meter record for Dynamic No Fins, and 212 meter record for Bi-Fins.  2023 will see her travel to South Korea to compete in the Aida Freediving World Championships.  We cannot be prouder of our Coach Bevin.

Teru has extensive experience and brings both her excellent people skills and love for swimming to each of the individual lessons that she teaches. She holds an International Accreditation in Teaching People with Disabilities and a STA Safety and Rescue Certificate.  She is a certified Learn-to-swim teacher with Swim South Africa.

Jemma is an Internationally Certified (STA) Learn-To- Swim coach, holds an Internationally approved (STA) Safety and Rescue Certificate and is an approved SDIT Baby Swimming Coach.  Jemma is also a STA tutor and offers their Internationally recognised Learn-to-swim program on-line or in-person.

Alex has been immersed in swimming and teaching from a young age. She is also an Internationally Certified (STA) Safety and Rescue Instructor and a member of the NSRI.
